Pancare’s Festival of Sports raises over $348,000
On Friday 15 November 2019, Pancare Foundation hosted its 5th annual Festival of Sports in the Olympic Room at Melbourne’s iconic MCG, raising over $348,000 for the Foundation.
Attended largely by corporate supporters, Pancare Foundation CEO, Doug Hawkins, welcomed attendees reaffirming Pancare’s commitment to putting the spotlight on pancreatic and upper gastrointestinal cancers, as well highlighted the progress the charity is making in supporting Australians impacted by such diseases.
MC for the event, Michael Roberts, led a series of insightful interviews with some of Australia’s most celebrated sporting icons including, former AFL player and coach David Parkin, AFL field umpire ‘Razor’ Ray Chamberlain, Olympian and Tour de France Green Jersey winner Baden Cooke, and Paralympic Gold Medalists Kelly Cartwright and Tim Matthews. ‘Razor’, with his quick-witted humour quickly confirmed himself as a crowd favourite judging by the laughter in the room.
Long-time Pancare supporter, Damien Woodruff, who sadly lost his four-year battle with pancreatic cancer in January this year, was remembered during a special tribute led by friend Mick Smith. On behalf of Pancare, Mick announced a 3-year scholarship that will be established in Damien’s name to be awarded to a PhD researcher in the field of pancreatic cancer. Opened by a pledge of $5,000 from Insurance Advisernet, the pledge was facilitated by ANZ’s Shout for Good technology which helped raise over $28,000 to establish the scholarship.
Pancare founder, Dr Mehrdad Nikfarjam, took to the stage to share the sobering statistics of the disease which affects over 3,500 Australians each year. He spoke fondly of his patients grit and determination in overcoming such cancers as well the positivity and resilience of the human spirit displayed in each person’s journey. Dr Nikfarjam, also shared the progress of Queensland based patient, Julian Jeffries, whose personal account of being diagnosed with the disease at the 2018 event touched the hearts of many.
Event attendees were delighted by livestock auctioneers James and Tim from Riverina Livestock Agents (part of the RMA Network) with the fast-paced and entertaining auction. A series of luxury holidays, sporting experiences and exclusive horse racing packages attributed to over $70,000 for Pancare Foundation.
Over the 5-year history of the event, Festival of Sports has now raised over $1.5 million for Pancare Foundation – helping to support the vital work of the charity in delivering patient support services and commitment to research.
