Emeritus Patron Of Courage – Phil Sly
Phil Sly is an entrepreneur, building developer, passionate racehorse owner, philanthropist and cancer survivor. He is also a father, grandfather, husband and a man who gives value to the lives of others.
More than a decade ago he lost his wife Kerry to cancer, and was left to raise two young children, which he has raised wonderfully well. In 2011 he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer that had spread to the liver. His prognosis was poor. Since that time he has had multiple operations and endless rounds of chemotherapy.
The cancer keeps coming back, but the determination and spirit of Phil to fight it remains strong, despite the physical impact of the disease and its treatment. His courage and never-give-up attitude has been an inspiration to those around him and other patients far and wide. His short video provides us with a small glance of his fighting spirit.
Phil Sly’s association with Pancare Foundation started in 2011 when treated for his liver tumours. He shared in his surgeon’s dream that all patients with pancreatic, liver, biliary, oesophageal and stomach cancer should have the right to receive the best possible treatment available anywhere in the world, with the goal of improving and saving lives.
Since that time Phil’s vision and support have been instrumental in taking the Pancare Foundation from infancy to a nationally recognised organisation. A key supporter in various capacities, including serving on the Board of directors and helping to create a multifaceted team, Phil has continued to be an advocate for the organisation, in particular its goal to foster world-class research, through his media relations in the horse racing industry both in Australia and in Japan and through various fundraising events.
He has enabled the establishment of several important project grants and an ongoing research scholarship that bears his name, the Phil Sly Pancare Foundation Scholarship. He has had a tremendous impact on the organisation creating a movement with his ever-growing supporters, who actively help in various ways to improve the outcomes for cancer patients.
The Pancare Foundation is grateful for Phil giving his voice to our organisation, during his continued battle with cancer. His generosity, passion and inspirational approach to life that he shares is a gift to us all and serves to empower others fighting the battle with cancers.
Pancare inspires to the words of Phil Sly when he says “it takes more energy making excuses than finding the answers”.
At the Pancare Foundation, with the support of this courageous individual we are working hard to find the answers and making a difference in the lives of those affected by pancreatic, liver, biliary oesophageal and stomach cancers.
