Free webinar will help navigate the journey of pancreatic cancer
People affected by pancreatic cancer can join a free webinar Pancreatic cancer – navigating the journey on Tuesday 28 March 2017, from anywhere across Australia.
The webinar, a joint initiative between Cancer Council Victoria and Pancare Foundation, will discuss practical issues surrounding treatment and managing dietary issues, as well as advice on where to access reliable information and support for those affected by pancreatic cancer.
About 2600 Australians are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, with the average age at diagnosis being 72 years of age. Pancreatic cancer was estimated to be the tenth most common cancer in in Australia during 2014.
Nurse Manager of Cancer Council Victoria’s 13 11 20 Information and Support line, Katherine Lane, said the webinar will provide information on how people can connect with support services.
“A diagnosis of pancreatic cancer can often leave people feeling shocked and bewildered. Things can often move quite quickly from diagnosis to treatment and this can be challenging for those affected, when trying to balance other demands such as work, family, friends or study,” Ms Lane said.
Ms Lane said accessing support and information can help alleviate anxiety and can help people feel more in control through their experience.
Graham Wells was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in February 2015 and will reflect on his own journey and provide others with advice for coping with cancer during the webinar.
“I would like to encourage anyone going through pancreatic cancer or caring for someone, you are not alone. Work out things that work well for you and link up with other people who have gone through similar tough times.”
Pancare Foundation CEO Angelia Dixon said organisations like Pancare are there to provide support for people affected by pancreatic cancer.
“We can offer financial support for services that help families affected by pancreatic cancer,” Ms Dixon said.
The Pancreatic cancer – navigating the journey with cancer presenters will discuss:
• a personal account on how to navigate the disease and treatments
• strategies to manage the physical, emotional and practical challenges
• how to manage dietary issues
• access to reliable information and support
