By its nature, pancreatic cancer is difficult disease to diagnose, treat and manage. Treatment can cause multiple physical problems as well as numerous psychosocial consequences. We want to ensure patients and their families are equipped with the right information to make informed choices on how they can be in control of their journey living with the disease.

Pancare Specialist Cancer NurseOur Pancare Cancer Specialist Nurse, Shannon is a trained registered nurse, qualified in specialist cancer care. She supports people with pancreatic and upper GI cancer and their families and carers across Australia. The Cancer Specialist Nurse plays a vital role as a patient advocate and through the co-ordination of care for patients, their families and carers, by assisting patients to understand their treatment, and provide information.

Although Shannon can’t give individual medical advice, she can talk about the effects of specific types of cancer and explain what will happen during processes like chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other cancer treatments. She can also provide tailored informational support and can link you with our wider range of support programs for further emotional, financial and practical help.

You can speak to our nurse about anything to do with cancer including:

  • help to clarify information given to patients by their treating doctor the diagnosis of cancer
  • help to clarify medical terms
  • provide information about treatments and their side effects e.g. chemotherapy, radiotherapy, pain medication
  • provide information about procedures and their side effects e.g. surgery, stent insertions/changes
  • talk with you generally about your cancer experience
  • provide you with printed information
  • end of treatment questions, end of life questions

Our Pancare Cancer Specialist Nurse also plays a valuable role in education and raising awareness about early detection. Although typically this service is of most value to people diagnosed with pancreatic and Upper GI cancer and their families, our registered nurse provides information and support to anyone with a question or experience related to pancreatic and Upper GI cancer.

If you are worried about any aspect of the disease – whether you have symptoms and you don’t know what to do, if you are newly diagnosed, have questions about treatment options, or you are simply just having a bad day, please don’t hesitate to contact Pancare’s friendly, trained Pancreatic and Upper GI Cancer Nurse.
