Susan found out she carried the CDH1 gene, which required her to have annual gastroscopies. She underwent gastrectomy surgery following her own diagnosis of stomach cancer.
Pancare’s Wellbeing Counsellor played a crucial role in guiding Susan through this challenging experience, maintaining a grounded perspective and helping her navigate overwhelming emotions. With the support of a Pancare telehealth support nurse and counselling, Susan learned to cope effectively and has since adapted to life without her stomach.
“The Pancare Counsellor kept me on the straight and narrow. She was able to bring me back to reality when I was getting overwhelmed and worried about the future. She was incredible.”
Now, Susan is thriving and actively seeks to share her experience with others who may be facing similar diagnoses. She believes it is possible to live a fulfilling life after a gastrectomy, especially when it comes to enjoying her favourite foods.
The most significant lesson Susan learned from Tiffany, her support nurse, was the importance of patience and listening to her body as it healed in its own time.
